Proxy server (Squid)
Squid is a high-performance proxy caching server for web clients, supporting FTP, gopher, and HTTP data objects. Squid keeps meta data and especially hot objects cached in RAM, caches DNS lookups, supports non-blocking DNS lookups, and implements negative caching of failed requests.

Mail server (sendmail)
On the Internet, sendmail is the most popular Unix-based implementation of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) for transmitting e-mail. When a sendmail server receives e-mail, it attempts to deliver the mail to the intended recipient immediately and, if the recipient is not present, it queues messages for later delivery.

iptables give you flexibility in protecting your services (firewall feature), powerful routing features (network address translation, or NAT), manipulating packets (packet mangling), and most useful is the connection tracking feature. At the packet filtering (firewall) level, you can control which services may be accessed, and how they may be accessed. At the NAT level, you can use the packet filtering feature, process the packets, and send them to a specific host on your network, service on the same box, or simply drop the request at the doorstep. Fileserver (samba)
Samba is an Open Source/Free Software suite that provides seamless file and print services to Microsoft Windows clients. Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol that is installed on the host server. When correctly configured, it allows that host to interact with a Microsoft Windows client or server as if it is a Windows file and print server.

Stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP provides a means of dynamically configuring the IP addresses, network numbers, and server locations for the computers on your local network. Instead of manually configuring each machine on your network with IP address, netmask, default gateway and dns server settings, the server will do this automatically for each machine.

vsftpd is a secure, extremely fast and stable FTP server for Linux. It allows external people to ftp into your webserver to download or upload files.

Allows users to retrieve e-mail from your server using either POP3 or IMAP from any email client.

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. It allows your website or intranet to be dynamic and self-updateable.

Stands for secure shell. It is a very secure form of remote access allowing system admin to remotely administer the server.

BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is an implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols. The BIND DNS Server is used on the vast majority of name serving machines on the Internet. It resolves DNS names to IP addresses.

Yum is an automatic updater and package installer/remover for rpm systems. It automatically computes dependencies and figures out what things should occur to install packages. In a nutshell, YUM keeps your Linux machine up to date with the latest security patches. YUM can be configured to download updates from a local South African mirror to save on bandwidth.
