What is Google Panda?

What is Google PandaIn 2011 the search algorithm used by Google to improve search results was changed and Google Panda refers to this change. These changes were made to aim toward lowering the rank of "low-quality sites" in search results, thus returning only high-quality sites to the Google visitor. CNET has reported that news and social networking sites were now ranking higher than advertising sites.

Difference between Panda and previous algorithms.

  • It is thought that Panda takes the behavior of users into account
  • Panda seems to impact the ranking of the entire website instead of individual pages
  • Updates to Panda are periodical and is not in continuous development

What is Panda's Target?

To put it simply, Panda's aim is to, reduce spam by websites, reduce content / link farms and reduce low quality content. This means that when a user performs a search on Google, the probability of them landing on a website that is not relevant to what they wanted should be reduced. We have all searched for something, only to get to pages filled with links and upon clicking on a link, you get more links and adverts everywhere, but never get to what you were looking for. This new process also makes it very difficult for unethical SEO companies to use Black Hat Marketing strategies.

Who will be affected?

  • E-commerce sites (product selling) with low quality product pages
  • Sites that have been designed as primarily advert sites by using paid advertising
  • Sites that have been designed to host articles, but with low quality or duplicate content
  • Sites that have price comparisons, but hardly any content
  • Travel or Tourism sites that contain duplicate reviews or poor reviews
  • Low usability and low branding websites
